Just another day in the life of Wit
We had a little scare this week. Life with Wit is always exciting and unpredictable, and just when I think I have a handle on his allergies.....BOOM we have an incident. For the story on how it all started you can read about his anaphilaxis reaction to milk at just 8 weeks HERE.Since that time we found out about his additional allergies to:SoyGlutenPeanutEggSunflower seedsPeasand of course the off the charts not ever going to grow out of it, life threatening, MILK!We have a strict NO MILK policy in our house due to this, but we still eat the other foods since we don't think they will cause anaphylaxis, just throwing up, rash, and coughing and sneezing, all of which we have been able to control with Benadryl. I am careful to wipe EVERYTHING down and prepare his food totally separate from our food, scrubbing my hands after I prepare our food to then prepare his food.We don't go out to eat for the simple fact that keeping a 1 year old entertained and under control at the restaurant is hard in it self, but try one who cannot touch ANYTHING there unless it is properly wiped down. I also have to cook and bring his food in since he cannot eat anything they prepare due to cross contamination. I am stressed the whole hour we are there, and honestly it's just not worth it.So this week on our way to play practice (Mia and Sadie are in Cinderella!), I thought a soy Frappuccino from Starbucks might be nice. I carried Wit the whole time we were in line and waiting for our drinks to make sure he didn't touch anything since milk is EVERYWHERE in Starbucks. Within about 2 minutes of being there Wit started to cough. He seemed fine, so I didn't think anything of it. By the time we picked up our drinks and loaded back in the car the coughing had picked up, but I just gave him a drink of his juice thinking he maybe had a tickle in his throat. Two minutes later when we arrived at our destination he started to wheeze. One of my friends who also has a child with severe allergies noticed right away that something was wrong. I am so thankful for her and that she was there! Somehow Wit had breathed in milk protein while being in Starbucks and it was obstructing his air way. Thank God we were able to stop the wheezing with Benadryl and my friend's Albuterol inhaler (I learned a big lesson to always bring mine with me in the future!).Poor little Knox in my belly must have really wondered why his mommie's blood pressure and heart rate were through the roof!We made it though through another little episode. I am so thankful. It is not always easy by any means managing Wit's severe allergies, but I always learn something, I always grow personally through each episode, and at the end of the day I am forever reminded about what is really important.Don't sweat the small stuff people! It really doesn't matter :)
